Where to live next: Oxford

From its world‑famous university to thriving new industries, Oxford remains one of the UK’s most desirable places to call home

Where to live next: Oxford

Home to the world‑renowned University of Oxford - the oldest university in the English‑speaking world - the city is steeped in history like no other. Walk through its cobbled streets, past landmarks such as the Radcliffe Camera and the Bodleian Library, and you’ll be treading the same paths as its famous alumni, including 28 British Prime Ministers and authors such as J.R.R. Tolkien and Oscar Wilde.

Together with Oxford Brookes University, this academic excellence continues to shape the city. The region has increasingly become a hub for the healthcare, life sciences and biotech industries, with initiatives such as the Ellison Institute of Technology campus, backed by Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison, set to open at the Oxford Science Park in 2027.

William Kirkland, Knight Frank’s Oxford Office Head, has spent 28 years in the city and says the diverse mix of people and culture is one of its greatest strengths. “Buyers have long been drawn from London and overseas to Oxford, in particular for its wide array of highly regarded state and independent schools for all ages” he says. “These growing sectors are bringing a new wave of young professionals who value the family‑orientated lifestyle the city offers - it ticks all the boxes.”

Oxford: a city of convenience and charm

Consistently ranked as one of England’s greenest cities, Oxford offers plentiful open spaces such as Port Meadow and University Parks, as well as the rolling countryside of the Cotswolds on its doorstep. Meanwhile, with easy links to nearby hubs such as Heathrow, Bristol and Swindon, well‑connected rail services will take you from the city centre to London in just over 50 minutes.

William notes that many of those who live in Oxford choose to stay long‑term - or return. “We see buyers who went to university here and have that natural pull back to the city once they have children, as they have such fond memories,” he says. “Similarly, those who are downsizing from larger houses in the surrounding countryside see moving closer to the centre as an opportunity to simplify their lives.”

Choosing a neighbourhood in Oxford

Among the most desirable neighbourhoods are those to the north, centred around the streets leading off the arterial Banbury Road and Woodstock Road. As well as being within easy walking distance of the city centre, this area offers effortless access to some of the best schools and green spaces. “Expect to pay upwards of £1,000,000 for a semi‑detached or terraced family home,” advises William. “Meanwhile, the large detached homes found east of Banbury Road are among the most sought after, and can far exceed this.”

Headington and the surrounding area offer relative value and are well positioned for Oxford’s leading hospitals, including the John Radcliffe Hospital and Nuffield Health Oxford. “There are also lovely little pockets in the city such as Iffley and Old Marston, which were once small villages and have now been wrapped into the suburbs,” he adds.

William’s local gems

“Port Meadow stretches across more than 330 acres and is a Site of Special Scientific Interest thanks to its incredible biodiversity. I feel lucky to have it on my doorstep and walk the dog there in the mornings before breakfast.”

“Punting on the River Cherwell from Magdalen Bridge in the center is a must for anyone, tourist or resident, and a wonderful way to pass a sunny summer’s day.”

“Just off the High Street is a Grade II* listed building, home to Thai restaurant Chiang Mai Kitchen. The combination of the setting and the food is an extraordinary experience.”
