The charm of Britain’s period homes not only lies in their beautiful architecture, but in the rich history of both the buildings and the people that lived in them. We take a look at the previous residences of pioneers in the medical and creative fields, and a charming seaside property with a royal past. Read on to discover the details.
A blue plaque is the ultimate marker of a home with a fascinating story to tell. The first on our list belongs to this impressive residence dating back to the 1800s formerly owned by Sir Harold Gillies. Described as a pioneer plastic surgeon, he gained international renown for the techniques he developed to repair the faces of soldiers returning from World War I. Today, this impressive 14-bedroom property in the heart of the desirable Hampstead Village retains much of the original period charm while being equipped with every state-of-the-art amenity desired for modern-day living.

Considered to be one of the most notable private residences in the area, The Argoed was visited by Charles I during the Civil War, was home to the Probert MPs who served in the late 17th century, and was later lived in by the Chairman of the Great Western Railway.
It's cultural significance doesn't stop there. It was also where George Bernhard Shaw wrote The Man of Destiny and Mrs Warren’s Profession, and is the former home of Led Zeppelin rock legend, Mr Robert Plant CBE. Beatrice Webb, founder member of The Fabian Society, also lived here, and was known to host prominent friends and guests at the property towards the end of the 19th century.

Riversea has significant historic interest dating back to 1867. Predominantly known for its royal connections, the property had several visits from Albert, Prince of Wales, while a royal warrant was issued granting the owner rights to Riversea's foreshore area. The property was registered as a hotel in 1934 and remained that way for 15 years, until it became a private home once more in 1949.

Originally a modest 18th-century farmhouse, the property was expanded by artist sisters, Juliana and Charlotte Strickland, in 1817. The sisters' intention was to create a grand country house for their Gloucestershire Estate, which they bought in 1815.
The extension was the work of renowned local architect, John Collingwood, whose previous projects included refurbishments to Gloucester Cathedral and The Precinct. The property presents a unique opportunity to restore this grand country estate and make it your own.
