This September, after an absence of 45 years, the high-velocity thrills of Formula 1 roll into Madrid, adding yet another layer of international glamour to the culture and vitality of the Spanish capital. Hosting one of the world’s most lucrative and prestigious sporting events is a major coup for Madrid, a city which can already claim a world-class sporting pedigree.
“Understandably, there’s great excitement in Madrid about the arrival of the Grand Prix,” says Jack Harris, Partner in Knight Frank’s International Team. “The event adds a further dimension to a city that has become a sporting titan. Annual highlights include the Masters tennis championships and cycling road races to go with Madrid’s world-famous football teams and stadiums and, in four years’ time, the city will co-host matches in football’s World Cup. Being awarded the Formula 1 race is yet another noteworthy achievement and clear evidence of Madrid’s growing international profile.”
That growing profile is demonstrated by soaring interest in Madrid real estate. In the final six months of 2025, Madrid was second only to the Balearic Islands for the level of foreign property buyer spending. International purchasers paid an average of €3,862 per square metre on residential property, a year-on-year increase of 12% according to the General Council of Notaries.
Their figures also show that international buyers accounted for 12% of residential transactions in Madrid between June 2025 and May 2026, while Knight Frank’s own research, recorded in the 2025 European Lifestyle Report, saw Madrid rank third as a preferred destination among 700 high-net-worth-individuals seeking to relocate. And while Madrid is a true melting pot of nationalities, it is finding significant favour with US buyers: The Wealth Report 2026 recording that Knight Frank’s Madrid office saw the US share of prime sales rise from 0.8% to over 8% between 2018 and 2025.
