COVID-19: The total number of cases recorded globally has surpassed 50 million, with circa 1.25 million reported deaths according to Johns Hopkins University & Medicine.
Equities: Globally, stocks are higher. In Europe, gains were recorded by the DAX (+1.9%), CAC 40 (+1.6%), STOXX 600 (+1.5%) and the FTSE 250 (+1.3%). In Asia, the CSI 300 (+2.0%), S&P / ASX 200 (+1.8%), Topix (+1.4%), Kospi (+1.3%) and the Hang Seng (+1.2%) all closed higher. In the US, futures for the S&P 500 are up +1.4%.
VIX: Following a -9.9% contraction on Friday, the CBOE market volatility index has deceased a further -0.6% this morning to 24.7, albeit remaining above its long term average (LTA) of 19.9. The Euro Stoxx 50 volatility index has also declined, decreasing -4.5% to 24.4, just above its LTA of 24.0.
Bonds: The UK 10-year gilt yield has compressed -3bps to 0.24%, while the German 10-year bund yield has contracted -2bps to -0.64% and the US 10-year treasury yield is down -1bp to 0.81%.
Currency: Sterling and the euro are currently $1.31 and $1.19, respectively. Hedging benefits for US dollar denominated investors into the UK and the eurozone are at 0.38% and 1.26% per annum on a five-year basis.
Baltic Dry: The Baltic Dry increased +0.2% on Friday to 1,196, however, this remains the lowest the index has been since mid-June. The Baltic Dry is -39% lower than it was at the peak seen in July, and over the last 24 sessions, the index has seen cumulative declines of -43%. However the Baltic Dry remains +10% higher than it was in January.
Oil: Brent Crude and the West Texas Intermediate (WTI) have increased +2.2% and +2.3% to $40.33 and $38.01, respectively. The WTI has remained below $40 per barrel since 23rd October.
Gold: The price of gold is currently $1,951 per troy ounce, the highest it has been since mid-September. However, gold remains -5% lower than its record high of $2,063 in August.
US Election: Joe Biden has been announced as the US president-elect, with Kamala Harris as the vice president-elect.
