COVID-19: The total number of cases recorded globally has surpassed 54 million, with circa 1.3 million reported deaths according to Johns Hopkins University & Medicine.
Equities: Globally, stocks are higher. In Europe, gains have been recorded over the morning by the CAC 40 (+1.3%), STOXX 600 (+0.8%), FTSE 250 (+0.8%) and the DAX (+0.7%). In Asia, the Kospi (+2.0%), Topix (+1.7%), S&P / ASX 200 (+1.2%), CSI 300 (+1.0%) and the Hang Seng (+0.9%) all closed higher. In the US, futures for the S&P 500 are up +0.9%.
VIX: Following a -8.9% decrease over Friday, the CBOE market volatility index has increased +1.9% this morning to 23.5, remaining above its long term average (LTA) of 19.9. The Euro Stoxx 50 volatility index has also increased, up +0.6% to 23.3, just below its LTA of 24.0.
Bonds: The US 10-year treasury yield and the German 10-year bund yield have both compressed -2bps to 0.88% and -0.56%, respectively. Meanwhile, the UK 10-year gilt yield has compressed -1bp to 0.33%.
Currency: Sterling and the euro are currently $1.32 and $1.18, respectively. Hedging benefits for US dollar denominated investors into the UK and the eurozone are at 0.38% and 1.26% per annum on a five-year basis.
Baltic Dry: The Baltic Dry decreased -0.8% on Friday to 1115, which remains at a 5-month low. Over the week to 13th November, the index declined -6%, its sixth consecutive weekly contraction. The main driver of this is the capesize index, which fell -10% over the week and has also seen six consecutive weeks of decline. Year to date gains in the index are now at just +2%, following cumulative declines of -47% over the last 29 sessions. When compared to the peak of 1956 seen on 6th July, the index is down -43%.
Oil: Brent Crude and the West Texas Intermediate (WTI) have increased +1.9% and +2.1% over the morning to $43.59 and $40.98, respectively.
Gold: The price of gold increased +0.7% to $1,889 per troy ounce on Friday, which is circa +24% above where it was at the start of the year, albeit -8% lower than its record high of $2,063 in August.
