Steven Lydon, recently sat down with James Brown, CEO and founder of Levin, a human capital firm specialising in connecting talent with tech firms in impactful sectors. They discuss the crucial role office spaces play in fostering company culture and Levin's own evolution within dynamic and flexible work environments.
When Levin first moved out of James’s home in July 2019, Steven assisted them in securing an office located on Brick Lane. Not long after settling into their new environment, the pandemic struck, propelling them into remote work like most organisations.
Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, Levin saw a tremendous 300% growth in headcount, driving the need for larger office spaces upon their return to in-person work. This led them to partner with British Land, which provided an office in One Finsbury Avenue, accommodating up to 4550 desks and enabling further growth.
Levin continued to expand, this time internationally. Singapore became their first stop beyond the UK, with Knight Frank’s Singapore office aiding in securing the necessary base for Levin’s Asia Pacific operations. Then to other global cities such as Amsterdam, Hamburg, Dallas, and New York. By late 2021, they had grown their UK operations again, meaning an internal move within One Finsbury Avenue.
Reflecting on the significant growth experienced by Levin, James credits the flexible office solutions and the strong partnership with British Land. He commented, “So I think that the partnership wasn’t just vital for our office space, which it was, or our office space progression. The partnership was vital to the business’s success in London in its entirety.” The partnership allowed Levin to swiftly adapt to unprecedented challenges and scale effectively.
Levin’s office space is more than a mere physical setting; it embodies the ethos of healthy competition and camaraderie crucial for their sales-based performance culture. An open-plan layout encourages transparency and fosters a competitive yet collaborative environment where teams strive for results while maintaining a sense of camaraderie.
James commented, “And so for us, the most important factor when choosing an office space is does it enable the culture that we’re looking to build internally in order to fulfil our own mission?”
Speaking of their experience working with Knight Frank, James said, “They were always there as a voice on the end of the phone when we needed to rationalise the environment and work out what is the best strategy to get bring our people back into the workplace and navigate those challenges.”
Flexible office space has been instrumental in Levin’s ability to grow, providing scalability and amenities that accommodate more than just space requirements. For rapidly expanding companies, partnering with property experts to offer these agile solutions has been beneficial and critical for business success.
