The consultation covers the proposed route from where Phase 1 of HS2 (London to Birmingham) ends at Fradley, near Lichfield, and continues to Crewe. A distance of around 50 miles by road.

Phase 2 will eventually link Birmingham with Leeds and Manchester via a Y-shaped route. Completion is mooted for 2033.

Safeguarding is a process that protects future infrastructure developments from any planning applications that could disrupt their development.

It is also important for affected property owners because it marks the point at which they can make a Statutory Blight claim against the government.

The consultation on the route closes on 6 January.
