Living in Wapping

Wapping is located to the east of London’s business district, on the north side of the Thames next to Tower Bridge, in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. Forming part of the Docklands, Wapping’s proximity to the river has given it a strong maritime character, which it retains through its ancient riverside public houses and time-trodden stone steps, such as the Town of Ramsgate, the Captain Kidd, Prospect of Whitby and Wapping Stairs.

Largely an undiscovered haven of tranquillity, Wapping has a village-like atmosphere which is hard to come by so close to The City. Accessible to all, the river is the main draw and very popular for jogging, or to walk along and enjoy the far-reaching views across the river and upstream to Tower Bridge.

To the east can be found faithfully restored warehouses and wharfs, on charming cobbled streets. In stark contrast to these are the impressive new developments along the western end of the High Street and St Katharine Docks which is brimming with glamorous yachts and numerous bars and restaurants and has a gourmet food market every Friday.

A short walk over Tower Bridge brings you to Shad Thames, a thriving area full of shops and riverside restaurants and bars, this area is well known for its architects and design agencies. Many of Wapping and Shad Thames residents walk to work in the City or to More London which are both within easy reach.

To the north west of Wapping is the City, the financial hub of London, to the east of which is Spitalfields, is an area long treasured by its largely artistic residents for its charm and historic ambience but which in recent years has become a hot spot for celebrities and City folk as well as some west London dwellers who previously might not have thought of buying in an E postcode!
