Living in Clerkenwell

Clerkenwell bridges the gap between Islington and the City and is well known for its trendy loft apartments, a hangover from the area’s industrial past. Popular with investors, pied-a-terre buyers and owner occupiers alike, the area has a number of well-known residential developments such as Brewhouse Yard on St John Street, Millennium Heights on Britton Street together with a handful of period houses on streets such Seckforde Street and around Northampton Square, which, due to their rarity always command a premium.

Historical references to the “clerks’ well” can be traced back as early as 1174 and gave the area its name. In the 18th and early 19th century, Clerkenwell was part of London’s industrial heartland and it was the buildings that were created at this time that gave way to offices housing design agencies and magazines, fashionable bars and restaurants and apartments for a new generation of residents.

Clerkenwell has some of London’s best-loved gastro pubs such as The Eagle on Farringdon Road and The Well on St John Street, supplied with fresh top quality meat by Smithfield market which is on its doorstep. The regeneration of Exmouth Market in recent years has seen the arrival of a wide variety of bars and restaurants including Sam and Sam Smith’s much lauded Moro.

Tucked away behind the period terraces of Myddelton Square and in the shadow of New River Head, the Metropolitan Water Board’s former headquarters and now exclusive apartments; Sadler’s Wells in London’s flagship venue for contemporary dance.
