Living in Barnsbury
Barnsbury is a leafy residential area to the west of Upper Street typified by elegant Georgian and early-Victorian terraces and attractive garden squares such as Gibson Square, popular due to its close proximity to Upper Street and Thornhill Square, a little further to the west with its attractive planting and children’s playground.
In amongst the period properties are a number of more modern developments such as Mica House, a highly desirable modernist development in Barnsbury Square and Barnsbury Place on Barnsbury Park, a stylish re-development of a former Victorian school.
Islington Square, on the site of the former North London Mail Centre and close to Upper Street is the most exciting development that Barnsbury has seen for many years. Currently being re-developed by renowned developers Sager, properties within the 500,000 sq ft mixed use development will undoubtedly become the most sought after modern properties in years to come.
Barnsbury is now unrecognisable from the years following the Second World War when the area was left badly bomb damaged.
Better known than it once was due to Tony Blair, arguably Barnsbury’s most well-known resident in recent times, who lived in Richmond Crescent with his family prior to his election in 1997; Barnsbury has long been an area that has attracted famous faces including amongst others, Benjamin Britten, the composer who once lived on Offord Road.
Today Barnsbury is a haven for families and young professionals alike, with numerous green spaces, wonderful gastro pubs such as the Albion on Thornhill Road and the Drapers Arms on Barnsbury Street and close proximity to transport links at Angel. Caledonian Road & Barnsbury Overground station also provides and useful east/west link across the capital as an alternative to the Underground network.
