Living in Bayswater

The area of Bayswater is synonymous for grand white stucco fronted buildings, many built around garden squares such as Cleveland Square or in grand tree lined terraces along Westbourne Terrace, Gloucester Terrace or Lancaster Gate. Many of these beautiful buildings have been converted into flats and apartments with probably the most prestigious development being The Lancasters on the edge of Hyde Park.

Hidden behind these grand residences are numerous cobbled mews offering a variety of styles of houses and apartments and along Porchester Terrace are a selection of detached and semi detached Victorian family houses many having the additional benefit of private gardens. There is also a range of inter war purpose built mansion blocks many having south facing views across Hyde Park.

Bombed during the war, the northern part of Bayswater is now home to the Hallfield Estate designed by Sir Denys Lasdun, also famous for designing the South Bank.

With its proximity to the open spaces of Hyde Park and good transport links into the West End, Bayswater is fast becoming a very popular place to live whilst still managing to retain its unique village atmosphere.

Away from the hustle and bustle of Queensway and Paddington, the quiet leafy streets contain a variety of fine garden squares. Full of community spirit, one of the premier addresses is Cleveland Square where residents have access to the private communal Cleveland Gardens. One of the most family-friendly garden squares in London, the beautiful 1.5 acre gardens is surrounded on 3 sides by white stucco terraces and with the prestigious north terrace leading directly on to the gardens. Annually, the gardens play host to a variety of community activities including the SEBRA (South East Bayswater Residents’ Association) garden party and an annual firework display.

Bordered by the Westway in the North and Bayswater Road in the south the sweeping grandeur of the white stucco buildings along Lancaster Gate, epitomised by The Lancasters, have a sense of tranquillity and elegance. Once known for being home to the area with the most hotels in London, many hotels are now being redeveloped into luxury properties which appeal to local and international buyers.

Ideally located for the fantastic shopping amenities of Westbourne Grove and Queensway, the area is currently undergoing a regeneration programme, including that of an overseas investor who has purchased Whiteleys with the intention of turning the area into a ‘shopping and eating out’ village. A brief walk takes you to the Porchester centre, with its well-equipped gym, 2 Victorian swimming pools and a spa, with Paddington Library and Star Lanes ten-pin bowling alley also close by.

Connecting to other parts of the capital is easy with Lancaster Gate, Queensway and Bayswater underground stations being close by and Paddington station offering rapid transport links to London’s main international airport via the Heathrow Express. From 2018 this will be enhanced with the opening of the new Crossrail link which will cut journey times across London into the City (9 minutes) and Canary Wharf (16 minutes) considerably.

The area of Bayswater has often been used as a film and television location and include Alfred Hitchcock’s Frenzy, the film Notting Hill and most recently an episode of Sherlock featuring Benedict Cumberbatch, which was filmed in and around numbers 23 and 24 Leinster Gardens, two stucco houses which look like normal houses but are actually facades built to hide an open section of the London underground.
