_Live in Jane Austen’s family home in Hampshire
About Steventon House
Steventon House presents a rare opportunity to live in a remarkable country house in Hampshire. A house with history, stature, character and wonderful surroundings. It’s unmistakably Georgian and has a Grade II listing, but it's been carefully and exquisitely renovated. It’s a wonderful combination of historic charm and character, plus modern amenities.

The ornate fireplaces, high ceilings, sash windows and delicate cornices point to the property’s Georgian origins. Yet the bespoke kitchen is unmistakably contemporary, as is the temperature-controlled wine cellar.

You’ll find a principal bedroom and five double bedrooms, all of which have been renovated with style. The principal and two of the other bedrooms have adjoining bath or shower rooms.

Looking for somewhere to write? There are many places to choose from at Steventon House. And the countryside views are sure to inspire.
Jane Austen’s time at Steventon House
Steventon House was built by Jane Austen’s brother in 1810. Jane, herself, lived on the property from 1775 to 1801 in the original Steventon House. Jane’s father was the rector there and lived in Steventon for 40 years until he retired to Bath, taking Jane and the family with him.
Steventon was Jane Austen’s birthplace and home for the first half of her life. It’s where she read voraciously and began to write. Jane penned early versions of novels that would become some of her most celebrated – Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice and Northanger Abbey. They weren’t published until the early 19th century, however.
The Stevenson House grounds
You’ll find a veritable English country garden here. From the Wisteria Walk to the Rose Garden, the wildflower area to the kitchen garden; there’s a wonderful array of mature plants and trees. There’s an extensive lawn too, with paved areas that are ideal for al fresco dining or simply stopping to enjoy a morning coffee in the sunshine.
There’s a well-positioned swimming pool with accompanying changing facilities. This could be the place to spot a modern day Mr Darcy emerging from the pool!
Steventon House has secondary accommodation as well. Clover Cottage is at the bottom of the drive. It’s well established with a kitchen and 2 reception rooms, 2 bedrooms and a bathroom. It can work in multiple ways, as a guest house or staff accommodation for instance.
There’s also a spacious Coach House to the rear of the property. Currently, it’s used to store cars and garden machinery, as well as stables.
