_Senior retirement living: How renting in retirement could be a better option

Button House, a new development has launched with both rental and purchase options to meet the rising demand for flexible senior living accommodation
September 03, 2019

Traditional retirement plans vs senior rentals

Moving away from the rat race is viewed to be the norm for most retirees, however, that may no longer be the case. Research from Knight Frank's Active Capital Report suggests that a rising number of people are attracted to the buzz of city life and rental options are becoming increasingly popular.

According to the report, "flexibility of living, alongside affordability issues, are also leading to an increase in renting in all age-groups in some geographies previously dominated by the owner-occupied model.

"This phenomenon is occurring later in the life cycle, too, as a rapidly ageing population means there's a rising demand for senior living accommodation, which can allow independent living for longer, as well as care homes, as nursing needs intensify."

Some retirees are opting to move into pre-built hubs which promote; autonomous living; a thriving community and top class amenities.

One such luxury is Brio Retirement Living's Button House in Hackbridge, London Borough of Sutton, that has been adapted to the needs of its older residents. It's Brio's first scheme in London, after years of offering top quality living in other parts of the country including Stow-on-the Wold and Buckingham.

Rising demand for senior living accommodation

As well as offering flexibility and affordability, renting also defers responsibility of a property's upkeep to the development's landlord, which is a big attraction.

Another reason is downsizing. While the common preconception is that many over 65s downsize to get away from 'empty nest syndrome', in fact, data suggests that some families are moving into metropolitan centres to be closer to their children, who themselves may have young families. From here, they can offer better support and share in on the life of the young family's journey.

By 2100, the number of people aged 60 and over is expected to triple to more than three billion, according to the report that highlights our globally ageing population. Residential schemes such as Button House not only offer a better lifestyle choice, but have the invaluable asset of providing healthcare to those who need it.

About Button House

Located on the site of a former cotton mill, the brand new development is designed to accommodate those in retirement, whatever their needs.

There are 80 one- and two-bedroom apartments available to rent and purchase and residents can enjoy a wide range of on-site facilities to encourage stress-free retirement living.

And while care and support can be provided for those who need it, other amenities include 24-hour on-site Brio staff; a resident's club lounge for socialising; a fitness suite; and a brasserie called Slate & Grain which serves up breakfast, lunch and dinner. Residents can also enjoy two landscaped outdoor terraces and, importantly, pets are also welcome.

Button House provides the opportunity to be part of a flourishing community, which is at the heart of the development. There's a weekly programme of social events offering residents the chance to get involved in leisure activities and make new friends.

The development is located near to a doctor’s surgery and close to Hackbridge town centre, which itself is thriving under new urban regeneration plans. A new Lidl store is also part of the New Mill Quarter development, allowing residents to pop in and out for necessities or do their weekly shop.
