What is a listed building?

According to Historic England listed buildings are categorised as: Grade I, Grade II* and Grade II.

Grade I is reserved for older, historic buildings "deemed to be of exceptional interest" and of "significant national importance." The Palace of Westminster, London and Warwick Castle are Grade I listed.

Grade II* buildings are "particularly important buildings of more than special interest." Buildings such as Battersea Power Station and Capel Manor House in Kent, fall under this category. 

Grade II is the most common and sits just below Grade II*. Grade II is given to a building or structure that is “of special interest, warranting every effort to preserve it.”

This means that it’s illegal to demolish, extend or significantly alter any listed buildings without special permission from the local planning authority.
