Affordable housing, great transport links and employment opportunities are drawing residents from London to Birmingham
July 26, 2019

As a capital city, London has a lot going for it. Great work opportunities, excellent national and international transport links, and a vast range of theatres, bars, clubs and green spaces. However, the number of people moving out of London has reached its highest level.

In 2018, migration from London to other parts of the UK reached its peak, according to data from the Office for National Statistics.

In England, Birmingham was the most popular destination for London leavers followed by Brighton and Hove. So, what's causing this movement?

“The flow of families out of London forms a natural part of any city’s life cycle,” says Oliver Knight, an Associate in the Knight Frank residential research team. “But increased employment opportunities in cities such as Birmingham and Manchester also act as a draw.

“Improvements to transport infrastructure, including the Elizabeth Line and HS2 will extend the scale of the commuter zone.”

Around 340,000 Londoners left the capital for another UK destination, according to figures up to June 2018 – compared to 336,014 in 2017.

What makes Birmingham such a popular destination for Londoners? As well as more affordable housing and work opportunities, Birmingham is a thriving city with excellent transport links, its own international airport, top arts and entertainment venues, renowned restaurants and famous canals.
