As Head of Knight Frank’s Stow-on-the-Wold office, Rupert Wakley has seen first-hand the thriving Cotswolds market. Indeed, over the past six months, his team have sold five properties in Taynton, collectively amounting to just short of £10 million, and is enjoying its best year to date since opening in 2013.

“Due to a lack of supply and strong demand the Cotswolds presents healthy property prices that should remain firm for the foreseeable,” explains Rupert.

It’s not hard to see why demand is so strong. Homes in Taynton are your quintessential British country abode, featuring period Cotswold stone, expansive gardens and a local 14th century church just a stone’s throw away.

Residents can also rest safe in the knowledge that this quaint setting won’t be suddenly interrupted by a new development, with much of the village and countryside under protection laws.

So, what’s the typical budget for someone looking to relocate to Taynton?

“Property prices here tend to start at between £500k to £600k,” says Rupert. “That’s for a three-bedroom cottage. For a family home with around five bedrooms and a decent garden, you’re looking at closer to £2 million.”

As well as welcoming families and those looking to enjoy a peaceful retirement, the area’s commutable distance from London makes it a popular countryside bolthole for those working in the capital.

“It takes just 90 minutes to commute from Burford to London,” explains Rupert. “A number of our buyers have bought a home to enjoy at the weekend, away from the hustle and bustle of city life.”

So far, so good. Is there anything about Taynton that’s not to love?

Rupert pauses before answering. “There is one potential negative,” he admits. “There’s no pub, so if you’re looking for somewhere to enjoy a pint at the weekends, Taynton may not be for you.”

For sale: 5-bedroom house in Icomb

So if not Taynton, where else could be worth considering in the quest to find the perfect countryside home?

“Good alternatives to Taynton include Kingham, Bledington, The Slaughters and Churchill,” says Rupert. “Another strong option is Icomb – we’ve just brought a £1.65m property to market there which I’m anticipating will attract a lot of interest.”
