_Quirky Homes of the Month: Interesting interiors

‘It’s what’s on the inside that counts' is considered cliché by many, but the classic saying has never rung so true for this month’s Quirky Homes.
May 10, 2017

With surprisingly spectacular interiors perfect for those in search of a domestic sanctuary, here are some of the very best homes currently on the market.

Bermondsey brickwork

3-4 bedroom house for sale in Bermondsey Street, London, SE1

Our first property is a four-storey period home on London’s vibrant Bermondsey Street.

Built circa 1721, the property retains many of its original features; visitors impressed by the ornate fireplace will be rendered speechless by the – wait for it – 200 year old decorative wallpaper which has been painstakingly hand-painted onto fabric bordered by timber and brickwork frames.

The property’s exposed wood and brickwork creates the kind of attractively distressed look that can, ironically, only be achieved with a great deal of effort and care. The warm tones of the surrounding wood create a feeling of cosiness, but viewers shouldn’t mistake this for a lack of space. Hidden shelving within the walls provides ample storage; perfect for putting away your possessions without ruining the shabby chic look.

And if that’s not enough, take a look at the built-in bookshelf – it’s actually a secret entrance to the top floor mezzanine area in the property’s roof.

Monochrome marvel

5 bedroom house for sale in Sandycoombe Road, Richmond, Twickenham, TW1

Our next property is a period house in St Margaret’s, Twickenham. A popular area for those with children due to the excellent nearby schools, those expecting a typical two-up two-down family number will be (very pleasantly) surprised.

On walking through the property’s light and spacious hallway, visitors find themselves in a vast open space that exudes clean, minimalist style, enhanced by the sunlight streaming in via floor to ceiling windows. A blend of materials ensures there is something to please everyone, whether you have a penchant for stone, wood or tiled interiors. And what you can’t see is just as impressive as what you can – all the rooms enjoy Sonos wireless speakers and underfloor heating.

But it is, for me, the property’s bedrooms where the interiors really come into their own. Pick any room and you find yourself immersed in an alluring and totally committed theme: turquoise and gold metallic; cool greys complete with a standalone bath tub and feature wall; or the more neutral pine wood tones of the attic bedroom encapsulated within sloping ceilings.

Even the bathrooms have their own sense of style, with one merging monochrome tiles with a silver and black feature wall and metallic silver bathtub. It shouldn’t work – but it utterly and totally does.

Urban living

1 bedroom flat for sale in Belgrave Road, Pimlico, London, SW1V

For our third property, we move into central London to a recently refurbished one bedroom apartment in the quietly elegant area of Pimlico.

Visitors to the Victorian Grade II listed terraced mansion are unlikely to anticipate the modern interiors contained within. The apartment turns traditional Victorian design on its head and embraces an almost industrial feel, although this is by far the most attractive ‘warehouse’ I have ever encountered.

Though a one-bed, the property provides plenty of living space, enhanced by glass partition walls and natural light streaming in through the skylight. Exposed brick walls combine with wood and steel to create a meticulously executed distressed look which makes even the coolest of hipster hangouts look a bit, well, outdated.

The perfect penthouse

3 bedroom flat for rent in Wiltshire House, Maidstone Buildings Mews, London, SE1

Our next property is a four bedroom penthouse apartment in Southwark, London.

On walking into the loft-style apartment, visitors are likely to marvel at two things: one, the sheer amount of space and two, just how very cool it is. The traditional and modern come together in the form of exposed brick walls and wooden beams coupled with original period features and a Lutron dimmer lighting system.

While the multiple staircases surrounding the main reception area don’t quite distract from the impressive log-burning stove, it is a different story upstairs. Surrounded by a bar, self-playing grand piano and a cinema screen, even the most focussed of individuals will find themselves looking around in awe.

That’s not all. Those who have enjoyed a particularly rigorous session in the property’s gym can take an outdoor shower up on the roof terrace – all while admiring the breath-taking views of the City and the Shard.

Ballroom dancing

4 bedroom flat for sale in Queen's Gate Terrace, South Kensington, London, SW7

Our final property this month is perfect for those who like the finer things in life. Located in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, this is not your typical maisonette. Well, unless your home currently has a ballroom in place, that is. No, mine neither.

Originally the ballroom for the South Kensington Hotel in the 1800s, the property offers unparalleled entertaining space as well as a grand private entrance complete with stained windows, all spread across an impressive 5,840 square feet.

In fact, the property is so enchanting it’s easy to see why the ballroom is a necessity; it’s likely that any new owners will break out into a celebratory dance.
