Wimbledon Village Area Guide
Why live here in Wimbledon
Wimbledon has a large selection of top-end private and state schools and as a result is a very popular area for families. It also benefits from a relaxed atmosphere with excellent amenities and great transport links into the city.
History of Wimbledon
Wimbledon came to prominence in the sixteenth century when Sir Thomas Cecil, first Earl of Exeter, settled here after being granted land by Elizabeth I. Known as the 'Maker of Wimbledon,' Cecil improved the road to London and built Wimbledon Manor House, where the monarchy later stayed as guests.
The Village developed from this time and prominent merchants, such as Robert Bell of the East India Company, established a trend by moving here and commuting on horseback to the City. Important families such as the Churchills and the Spencers quickly followed suit. Wimbledon became established as a fashionable location for the well-to-do and the influential.
Property type
The most sought-after properties are typically modernised Victorian or Edwardian family houses, close to transport links.
