History of Weybridge

The name Weybridge dates back to the 13th century and refers to the crossing of the River Wey, a tributary of the Thames. Today it provides a nexus for the area, with links to Chertsey, Walton and Addlestone.

In 1537 Henry VIII had Oatlands Palace built nearby. Its demolition, just over a century later provided bricks to line the Wey Navigation, one of the first canalised rivers in England. This provided a valuable transport link between Guildford and the Thames with London beyond. At the time the project's founder, Richard Weston of Sutton Place, faced much local opposition to this new method of transport.

Weybridge was still a sleepy village when Victoria ascended to the throne in 1836. This was rudely shattered however, two years later with the opening of the London & Southampton Railway. Weybridge was now within easy, convenient and inexpensive access of London.

The Surrey countryside was a great attraction to London’s office managers and workers. Grand villas appeared in St George's Hill - still one of the most sought after areas around London. The break-up of the Oatlands Estate opened up further opportunities for development and Weybridge became a bustling town. The medieval church replaced with St James and the town took the shape we see today.

Weybridge is also home to the Brooklands motor racing museum.
