Wandsworth Area Guide
Why live in Wandsworth
Wandsworth and Clapham Common are south London’s finest green open expanses and make this area a perfect location for families and sporting enthusiasts. For nature lovers, there are beautiful ponds and wooded areas bursting with wildlife.
Popular with families, part of Wandsworth has been dubbed ‘nappy valley.’ People moving into the area soon build up a great bank of friends and contacts, all within walking distance. Within its boundaries are ten of the best private schools in London and some excellent sports facilities and restaurants. Over the last ten years, Wandsworth has become a viable alternative to boroughs such as Chelsea and offers much better value for money.
History of Wandsworth
Both Clapham and Wandsworth appear in the Domesday book and both have had their share of famous residents throughout history. Clapham was frequented by wealthy merchants from the eighteenth century onwards, many of whom are responsible for the beautiful buildings visible today. Diarist Samuel Pepys spent the last two years of his life here and William Wilberforce was also a resident.
Wandsworth takes its name from the River Wandle, which joins the Thames here. Its domesday entry shows it yielded the princely sum of £9. Famous residents include novelist George Elliot and former Prime Minister David Lloyd George.
