History of Virginia Water

The Wentworth Estate, on which much of Virginia Water is built, takes its name from the Club House, a mock-Gothic nineteenth century country house which was home to the sister of the Duke of Wellington, Lady Anne Wellesley.

In the 1850s, Wentworth was owned by the exiled second son of Charles IV of Spain. The present estate, which covers 1750 acres, was created by his widow in 1877. It was eventually sold by Knight Frank at auction in the 1920s and a series of impressive houses were built on the outskirts of the famous golf courses.

Since 1964, the estate has been run by an elected committee of residents, who can ask planning applications to be given to them, before they are submitted to the local authority. The Wentworth Roads Committee is still responsible for the estate’s upkeep and they charge each property owner an annual levy to maintain roads and lighting.

Local beauty spots include Virginia Water Lake, Windsor Great Park and Windsor Castle. Legoland and Thorpe Park are also within an easy drive.
