Totteridge Area Guide

Why live in Totteridge
Bordering the green belt yet only 11 miles from central London, Totteridge has always been a very popular place to live.

Due to its location there are various stabling and equestrian centres nearby and great public walks through hectares of woodland. Totteridge and Whetstone underground station serves the local area and the M25 is just five miles away.

History of Totteridge

The name Totteridge is a corruption of "Tatta's Ridge". Tatta was presumably a local Anglo-Saxon notable. The ridge is the high ground between the valleys of Dollis Brook and Folly Brook.

Totteridge was originally a civil parish of Hertfordshire covering an area of 1,604 acres which protruded into Middlesex. It became part of Barnet Rural District in 1894, and was absorbed into Barnet Urban District in the early 20th century. At this time it had a population of little more than 800. In 1963 the parish and urban district were abolished by the London Government Act and the area became part of the London Borough of Barnet, becoming home to over 4,500 people.
