South and West Hampstead Area Guide
Why live in South or West Hampstead
South and West Hampstead is becoming an increasingly popular place to live and it is easy to see why. There are a large number of good restaurants, bars and cafes. West End Lane is a popular place to relax, wine and dine and is fashionable with the younger generation. With its excellent transport links, travelling to the City as well as to the North of the country is also easy.
History
West Hampstead lies between Childs Hill and Swiss Cottage in north-west London. To the East are Frognal and Hampstead and Kilburn is to the West.
Until the late 19th century, the area was a small village called West End. Modern West Hampstead emerged with the arrival of the railways when, as a result, the area was transformed from farmland to housing. In 1879, the Metropolitan Railway adopted the name West Hampstead for its station on West End Lane, the main road through the area. This was aimed at avoiding confusion with the West End in central London.
Decca Records, infamous for declining The Beatles, had its recording studio on Broadhurst Gardens in West Hampstead. Here, David Bowie and the Rolling Stones also made early albums. Abbey Road, where the Beatles did later record, can be found a few hundred yards south at the end of West End Lane.
