Royal Docks Area Guide

Why live in Royals Docks
Partly because of the lack of available property in Canary Wharf and on the Isle of Dogs, Royal Docks is now undergoing massive redevelopment. Over 80% of properties in this area are flats and new developments, offering a short commute to those who work in Canary Wharf as well as attractive views over the river.

History of Royal Docks
There are three Royal Docks: the Royal Albert, the Royal Victoria and the King George V. Together they form the world’s largest enclosed docks, with a water area of nearly 250 acres and an overall estate of 1,100 acres - equivalent to the whole of central London from Hyde Park to Tower Bridge. Completed between 1855 and 1921 on the riverside marshes, they suffered severe damage from bombing in World War II. Although they were recovered after the war, the docks suffered a steady decline from the 1960s onwards, as containerized shipping took off. They were finally closed to commercial traffic in 1981.
