Putney Area Guide
Why live in Putney
Putney is a popular residential area in South West London. It offers picturesque riverside living and easy access to a wealth of restaurants, bars and cafés. Putney residents have fast access to beautiful green areas in Richmond and Wimbledon and enjoy outstanding transport links to central London.
History
One of the first bridges over the Thames
The first permanent bridge to be completed between Fulham and Putney in 1729 was the second ever to be built over the Thames in London after London Bridge.
The outdoor life
For centuries, Putney’s clean air and picturesque riverside views attracted smog-choked visitors from central London. The area also has a long history of sporting achievement, particularly as a centre for rowing, which was impossible in central London due to the pollution of the Thames.
On your marks
The annual Cambridge and Oxford University boat race began in Henley-on-Thames in 1829 and has had its starting point in Putney since 1845.
Property type
The riverside at Putney provides a range of property from large Victorian houses to modern developments such as Putney Wharf Tower.
Places of Interest
- Leader Gardens, a small riverside park with tennis courts and a children’s playground
- Putney pier, where visitors can book private boat rides
- St Mary’s Church, the venue for the famous Putney Debates of 1647
