History of North Buckinghamshire

Battling Saxons and Danes

The county town, Buckingham, literally ‘meadow of Bucca’s people’’, is said to have been founded by Bucca, leader of the first German settlers in the 7th century.

The first settlement was located near the present day university and between the 7th and 11th centuries, it regularly changed hands between the Saxons and the Danes and ultimately received its charter from Queen Mary in 1554.

Markets and gardens

The town is centred on the historic market place and contains many 18th century buildings. The gardens at Stowe School House, designed by Capability Brown, are one of the area’s biggest attractions.
