Highgate Area Guide

Why live here in Highgate
Highgate village is approximately 6 miles from London’s West End and is one of the greenest parts of London, benefiting from proximity to Queen’s Wood, Highgate Wood and the east side of Hampstead Heath. Retaining its original village charm, it is a highly desirable place to live and is home to many A-list celebrities.

Highgate is the home of:

History
The village originally adjoined the Bishop of London's hunting estate and a toll-house levied traffic travelling via one of the main north roads into his land. A number of pubs sprung up along the route, one of which, the Gatehouse, commemorates the toll-house. In the 18th century the area was also associated with the highwayman Dick Turpin.

Highgate Hill became the site of the first cable car to be built in Europe, reflecting the continued wealth and importance of the area. This ran to and from Archway between 1884 and 1909.

Hampstead Lane and Highgate Hill contain the red-brick Victorian buildings of Highgate School and its adjacent Chapel of St Michael. The school has existed on this site since its foundation was permitted by letters from Queen Elizabeth I in 1565.

Highgate is divided by three London boroughs. With an active conservation society which aims to protect its character, it is recognised for its famous cemetery and its Georgian architecture. It is also the location of Berthold Lubetkin's two modernist ‘Highpoint’ apartment buildings.
