Why live here in Hereford

Situated in beautiful Herefordshire, Hereford is steeped in history, with black and white houses and is the home of Bulmer’s cider. A cathedral city, it has a fascinating past and a busy present.

History

Hereford means the ford used by the army and has been described as ancient, large and strongly walled. The Saxons arrived in this part of England in the 7th Century and a settlement grew up at the ford, as a strategic site on the River Wye.In the middle Ages the main industry was the manufacture of wool and leather work.

The Normans set about rebuilding Hereford Cathedral and a new Bishop’s Palace was built around 1180. Coningsby hospital was built in 1614, The Old House was built in 1621 and Aubreys Almshouses in 1630.

In the later 19th and 20th Century, the Buttermarket was built. A boat building, brick and tile industry began and brewing flourishes as did cider making.
