Hampstead Garden Suburb Area Guide

Why live here in Hampstead Garden Suburb
Hampstead Garden Suburb was commissioned by Dame Henrietta Barnet in the early 20th Century as an exercise in community living. Much today reflects its original conception: street signs retain their sans serif lettering; the garden its topiary; and the general atmosphere and layout its family-friendly feel. The springtime music festival, free lunchtime concerts and fund-raising evening performances also keep alive the great community spirit that Dame Henrietta intended. This is maintained by an active residents' Association with some 2,200 households in membership.

History
Hampstead Garden Suburb was founded in 1907 by Henrietta Barnett. With her husband Samuel Augustus, Barnett was responsible for several philanthropic community projects, including Whitechapel Art Gallery and Toynbee Hall. The principle aim of Hampstead Garden Suburb was to provide a beautiful and healthy place for people of all classes to live in.
It was extended in the 1930s and the area expanded to the north of the A1. It was once home to Elizabeth Taylor and several celebrities, including Jonathan Ross, Lord Winston and chat-show hosts Richard and Judy currently live here.
