History
East Horsley is listed in the Domesday Survey of 1086 as 'Horslei', meaning 'horses clearing' and it is probable that at one time East and West Horsley formed one settlement.
The area is rich in history and in the 11th century the local manor was held by the Archbishop of Canterbury for the benefit of the monks of Christ Church, Canterbury. The present parish church of St Martin has a Norman tower, various 13th century features and several additions made in the late 1860’s under the direction of local architect Henry Woodyer.
The manor house was rebuilt in the 1820s to designs by Sir Charles Barry, architect of the Houses of Parliament. In 1840 it was bought by the 1st Earl of Lovelace.
Lovelace was the son-in-law of the poet Byron and took the priory as his home, embellishing it with various features including a main entrance and a set of Bavarian-style towers which confered the name ‘Horsley Towers’.
He went on to gradually transform the village, building houses, cottages and a school in flint, decorative terracotta brick and tile. The local station was opened to in 1885 on the 'New Guildford Line' and it was not long before Horsley began to change into the popular commuter village of today.
