Cheltenham - Surrounding Villages Area Guide

Why live here?
The Cheltenham area is a perennial favourite with both commuters and families. The unspoilt village of Winchcombe to the north of Cheltenham offers a fine array of independent shops and traditional Cotswold stone houses. Other local villages, including Gretton and Fiddington, attract families for outdoor pursuits such as walking and cycling. To the south east of Cheltenham lies a plethora of pretty villages, including Whittington, Dowdeswell and Withington.

Cheltenham is the home of:

History

Prehistoric history
Hunter-gatherers roamed this region, leaving artefacts such as flint arrowheads that date back 6,000 years. The land has been farmed continuously for thousands of years and Stone Age and Bronze Age forts pepper the area.

Veni, vidi, vici
Romans left their mark on the area and visitors can enjoy the remains of at least two Roman villas. These houses were maintained for a short period after the Romans left Britain, but were abandoned by the end of the 5th century

The coming of the Saxons
The Saxons moved into the region during the 7th century and most place names near Cheltenham are Saxon in origin. The word Cotswolds is derived from the word for Saxon stone sheep shelters.

A history of prosperity
The whole area was already rich from wool and grain farming by the time the Normans invaded in 1066. By 1086, most of the land was cultivated.

Property type

In the 16th century, people began to use local stone to build their houses. Since then, the area’s characteristic limestone has been quarried extensively. Attractive Cotswold stone properties, ranging from cottages to Manor Houses, draw a host of visitors and make the region a favourite place to buy second homes.

The lovely local stone has travelled further afield to build St Paul's Cathedral in London, Melbourne Cathedral in Australia, and many of the Oxford colleges.
