History of Chelsea

In literal translation, Chelsea means ‘landing place on the river for chalk or limestone’.

A market village until the 19th century, it was absorbed by London’s expansion down the Thames. It has always been a popular place to live for the wealthy and in the past was favoured by Henry VIII and Sir Thomas More. More recent celebrity residents include Bernie Ecclestone, Freddie Mercury and Bob Geldof.

Property type
Chelsea Harbour, built around the marina in the late 1980s, is a central development that includes the benefits of porterage, 24 hour security and parking, and is typical of the new developments which have sprung up in recent years.

Otherwise, Chelsea has Georgian and Victorian property of a very high standard, arranged in attractive squares and quiet streets.
