Catherine Walters, unknown to many, was in fact a courtesan of great discretion, and consequently held in great regard, throughout the latter half of the nineteenth century.
Walters, who is said to have gained her nickname from working in the bowling alley in Chesterfield Street, was born in Liverpool and moved to London before her twentieth birthday.
She quickly became known for her great beauty and trendsetting fashions, drawing crowds when she went riding in Hyde Park in the 1860s. She counted among her many benefactors Spencer Cavendish, Napoleon III and the Prince of Wales (later to reign as King Edward VII).
It was primarily her reticence on the subject of her lovers that made her so respected and sought after in courtesan circles. She retired a very wealthy woman in 1890 and lived in South Street until her death in 1920.
