Exeter estate agents: 5 thatched houses for sale in Exeter

Date : 16 July 2010

Exeter estate agents, Knight Frank, have recently launched to the market 5 quite different thatched properties ranging from a magnificent Grade II Listed manor house to a characterful ‘chocolate box’ cottage.

In East Devon it is Greenway Manor, one of the finest examples of a Grade II Listed manor house which has been finished to an exceptional standard throughout.

The property for sale in Exeter has a wonderful history and was mentioned in the Domesday Book. Since purchasing the property, the present owners have undertaken a major restoration of the whole house and its gardens and grounds.

This work has been undertaken with an exceptional eye to detail, using only the finest quality materials and in particular, ensuring that the property retains many of its fine features. As a result, Greenway Manor can only be described as a perfect example of its type.

Also in East Devon is Luggs Farm, a beautiful and historic Grade II Listed farmhouse which dates back to the 16th Century. The property for sale in Devon occupies a wonderful rural position with views stretching across the Yarty Valley, arguably one of East Devon’s most sought after areas.

The house retains a wealth of original features such as chamfered and cambered beams, plank and muntin panelling, flagstone floors, inglenook fireplaces, a smoking chamber, bread oven and original timber doors. There is a barn to the side of the house which provides additional accommodation with potential to create further bedrooms (subject to the necessary consents) or to create a holiday let in an area sought after by summer visitors.

To the west of Exeter, on the edge of the village of Bishopsteignton, is Whidborne Manor, a beautifully presented Grade II Listed farmhouse. The property faces south south east, and from the gardens there are wonderful views to the Teign Estuary.

The building is believed to date back to 1450 and has been constructed of stone and cob elevations under a thatched roof. The accommodation is arranged over two floors and retains a wealth of original features whilst incorporating modern kitchen and bathroom facilities.

The fourth house for sale in Exeter is Buttercombe Cottage, a beautifully presented Grade II Listed thatched cottage which is believed to date back to 1630. The property faces due south and in recent years has been refurbished to a very high standard.  The property is situated within the parish of East and West Ogwell which is surrounded by beautiful rolling countryside midway between the South Devon coast and Dartmoor National Park.

Finally, set within the Dartmoor National Park itself is Thimble Hall at Hexworthy near Princetown. It has just been re-thatched.  Unusually this house is not Listed but still contains many original features such as oak beams and open fireplaces. The gardens are pretty moorland gardens and even the garage has a thatched roof!

Chris Clifford of Knight Frank’s Exeter office says, “Thatched properties hold an appeal and charm, like no other style of property.  Whilst those who have not lived under thatch before are sometimes cautious about it, those of us that have grown up with thatch have no hesitation in promoting its wonderful values – a cool house in the summer, a warm house in the winter.
