Vilamoura, next door to Quarteira, is reputedly the biggest private holiday estate in southern Europe. It combines qualities of traditional Portuguese town with those of Quinta do Lago. It has five 18 hole golf courses and was created in the 1970s as an up-market extension of Quartiera. It is based around Europe´s largest Marina which can berth 1000 craft. Bristling with hi-tech power boats and sleek yachts and is a great place for a leisurely stroll or people watching in many of the bars and restaurants.
The town beach Praia da Marina is stunning with some 2 miles of blue flag sands.
Climate
Winter temperatures around 15 degrees centigrade and summer around 30. More than 3000 hours of sunshine per year.
History of the area
The 1st of the golf courses to be built is the prestigious old course, opened in 1968. The latest, Victoria, was designed by Arnold Palmer, and hosted the 2005 WGC World Cup.
To the northwest of the Marina, the Museu Cerra da Vila us an archeological site displaying the vestiges of late Roman, Visigothis and Moorish colony. You can make out the foundations of a Roman mansion, baths and fish salting tank together with well preserved Roman mosaics.
Culture
There is a casino just south of the marina, with disco and regular cabaret style dance shows and exhibitions. Kodoc on the outskirts of Vilamoura is the Algarve´s biggest club which pulls in up to 8000 revelers a night often with guest international DJs.
Unique points
Lusort, the master developers of Vilamoura insist they are taking great care to preserve the environment. They have set aside 500 acres as an environmental park to protect and conserve wetland eco-systems rich in bird life. Specially constructed trails for walking and cycling make it popular with fitness enthusiasts.
Types of property available
There are several separate complexes with the overall resort many centered around golf courses providing town-houses, apartments and villas. The existing tourist and residential resort has been undergoing a process of upgrading and up-dating. Beyond the marina the development radiates outwards with a series of low density hotels and over a thousand villas set in sub-tropical grounds.
Just inland, there are fertile citrus orchards and vineyards, giving way to foot hills where attractive villages like Boliquieme nestle these areas are favored by foreigners looking for individual villas in a tranquil setting with the traditional Portuguese pace of life. Quartiera is favored by those with lower budgets.
Market comment
A huge amount of further development is planned with huge plans for improving the infrastructure with an extension to the marina and new properties with their own berths, a 1st for the Algarve and sure to push prices up further. 2 new 5 star hotels are currently being built and look set to improve the area further and bring more up-market tourists so it is still a good place to invest for those looking for capital growth.
Access
Only 20 minutes from Faro airport on the N125.
