Planned in 1942 and founded in 1946, Courchevel 1850 was the first alpine resort to be completely original rather than based around an existing village. Devised by renowned town planner Laurent Chappis, the resort saw its birth when the mayor of Saint-Bon, with the Conseil General de la Savoie, chose to build the resort on the Torets plateau, where Courchevel 1850 is located today.
By 1952 the Saulire Peak (2700m) was accessible by cable car linking Courchevel with the rest of the Trois Vallees. In 2006 Courchevel 1850 celebrated its sixtieth birthday and now provides access to over 600 km of pistes, generally accepted to be among the best in the world. Courchevel is now made up of 5 villages; Saint-Bon at 1100 metres, and the Courchevel villages designated by their altitude, 1300, 1550, 1650 and 1850, all of which share in the same atmosphere and art de vivre. Courchevel is also only 2 hours from Lyon or Geneva international airports, has its own airport where private jets can land and good train connections from Moutiers, which is only 15 minutes by car from Courchevel.
