The Bordeaux area sits in the northern part of the region of Aquitaine, in South West France. Built on a bend of the river Garonne, the city and surrounding area cover the valleys of the Garonne and Dordogne rivers as well as reaching the northern edge of the Landes forest and the huge sand-dunes of the Atlantic Coast.
The area has a rich and full cultural history, with Homo neanderthalensis having lived there some 90,000 years ago. Falling under Roman rule in 60 BC the city became a centre for trade in the region, a position it has held throughout the Middle Ages and into the present, with the land around it now consisting of over 110,000 hectares of vineyards.
Nearly 9,000 wine producing Chateaux contribute to an annual turnover of nearly 14.5 billion Euros with some of the most famous names in wine making up the rich tapestry that Bordeaux provides; including houses such as Lafite-Rothschild, Margaux and Latour.
Bordeaux itself is listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as “an outstanding urban and architectural ensemble” and matches historical town houses with glorious countryside residences, ranging from fortified towns and castles dating back to the 100 Years’ War to the traditional maison de maitres and chartreuse styles of building.
The area has now become wonderfully accessible, through the international airports in Bordeaux and Bergerac, and also through the TGV routes from Paris and the wonderful network of Autoroutes linking the area to the Channel ports in the north and the Mediterranean coast in the south.
