Megeve is one of the finest examples of the traditional alpine winter holiday towns, centred around both the picturesque and grand central "place" where exclusive boutiques share pride of place with a beautiful church and numerous bars and cafes as well as cobbled streets, horse-drawn sleighs and an open air ice rink.
Megeve has a firm and beating medieval heart and was really first developed in the 1920's as a French alternative to St Moritz. It has maintained its life blood of French buyers but is now becoming more of an international destination, with access to decent skiing and year round activities. For example a really rather good golf course sits up at Mont d'Arbois, covered by snow in the winter.
Unlike its higher cousins, Megeve's slopes run over lush summer pastures meaning that its relative lack of altitude (coupled with an ever increasing and efficient snow making setup) is not compromised as long as there is some decent snowfall.
