Located in the Atlantic Ocean, just to the east of Florida and north of Cuba, The Bahamas consist of seven hundred islands and two thousand cays.

Popular areas include Nassau, Abaco, Port New Providence, Paradise Island, Exuma, Lyford Cay and Eleuthera.

Climate

The Bahamas boast a generally good climate all year round, with trade winds providing consistent mild weather. Rain is more prevalent from May to November making its peak season between the months of December and April.

Northern and western islands are known to be cooler, whereas islands located further south can experience high temperatures in the summer.

Average temperatures in the winter range from 18 to 26 degrees Celsius. Summer temperatures range from 24 to 31 degrees Celsius.

History of the area

The Bahamian island of San Salvador is best known for being the site of Christopher Columbus’s first landing in the New World. The Bahamas were made a British colony in 1718, becoming completely independent in 1973.

Unique points

Bahamian culture has a mixture of European and African influences. Probably most distinctive is a form of music named Junkanoo, centred around an annual summer festival.

The islands’ maritime heritage is also important and many islands have annual celebratory sailing regattas, usually featuring one or more days of sailing by old-fashioned work boats as well as an onshore festival.

Seafood is the staple of the Bahamian diet, more specifically, the conch and rock lobster are very popular.

Fish fries are also very popular events – taking place in many islands of The Bahamas all year round. Welcoming residents and visitors alike, these are parties offering music and local fare such as fried fish, conch fritters, conch n’ grits, potato bread, macaroni and cheese and guava duff.

Types of property available

The Bahamas have every type of property to offer - whether it be a townhouse or development apartment; an oceanfront house, land to be developed or your own private island.

Due to the country's accessibility, natural beauty and favourable tax laws, Bahamian property is attracting investors from North America, the UK, Europe and the Middle East. 2007 has seen a dramatic increase in the demand for high-end properties and there are several developments in planning that aim to service the luxury market. The Bahamian property market is more stable than that of South Florida and as supply dwindles it is expected that the healthy rates of appreciation will continue.

Access

Direct flights are available to Nassau airport from London Heathrow, and the islands have two further international aiports at Grand Bahama Island and The Exumas.
