Wapping area and property guide
Why live here in Wapping
Wapping is a largely undiscovered haven of tranquility to the east of London’s business district. Its village-like atmosphere is hard to come by so close to The City and neighbours and colleagues alike can be found jogging along the river, or taking in the atmosphere of one of its cosy riverside pubs.
To the east can be found faithfully restored warehouses and wharfs and charming cobbled streets. In stark contrast to these are the impressive new developments along the western end of the high street and St Katharine Docks. These come with far-reaching views across the river and upstream to Tower Bridge.
The river is the main draw to Wapping, and is is accessible for all to walk along and enjoy. St Katharine Docks brims with glamorous yachts and has numerous bars and restaurants. A short walk from here is The Tower of London and transport links providing easy access to the rest of London.
Wapping is home to:
A surprising number of familiar faces from TV and film stars to chefs and premier league footballers live in or have second homes in Wapping. Many captains of industry are in the area too, choosing Wapping for it's proximity to the City without the noise and bustle of the City streets.
History
Wapping was first settled by the Saxons and translated literally means “(the place of) Wæppa's people”. Proximity to the river has given it a strong maritime character and it was inhabited by sailors, mastmakers, boat-builders and many other seafaring traders until well into the 20th Century. All along the high street are relics of this era such as the old hoist mechanisms of the warehouses or sets of worn stone steps down to the Thames.
