History of Sutton Coldfield
Fifteenth century bishop John Vesey, born in Sutton Coldfield, was a friend of Thomas
Wolsey, Canon of Windsor and chaplain to King Henry. When Vesey became Bishop of
Exeter in 1519, the King awarded him the temporalities of the See, worth about £1,500
a year. Sutton Coldfield was to benefit greatly from his wealth. In 1527 Vesey obtained
a charter from Henry VIII to enclose 40 acres of land where he built a grand house
(now Moor Hall Hotel). He lived in considerable comfort, employing 140 men in scarlet
caps and gowns.
The Royal Town
When Sutton Coldfield fell on hard times, Vesey asked the King to grant the town
a Royal Charter, to be known forever as "The Royal Town of Sutton Coldfield".
This corporation survived until 1885, when it was replaced by a municipal borough.
The town and borough formed part of Warwickshire until 1974. The formal Mayoral
chains of office are now on display in Birmingham Council House.
