St John's Wood area and property guide
Why live here in St John's Wood
With close proximity to Regent's Park and the West End, St John's Wood is a very desirable residential district. It enjoys a secluded and tranquil atmosphere yet offers great transport links to central London and the M4. St John's Wood features some of the UK’s most expensive houses and was one of the first parts of London to eschew typical Victorian terraces for much larger, lower-density villa housing that residents still enjoy today.
St John's Wood is the home of...
- Lord’s Cricket Ground – the legendary cricket venue with its landmark media centre (www.lords.org)
- Avenue Road, one of the most exclusive addresses in London with many houses selling for more than £40 million
- Abbey Road Studios, where the Beatles cut their famous tunes (www.abbeyroad.co.uk)
History
All in a name
The area was owned by the Knights Templar until the 13th century. It was then bequeathed to the Knights of St John of Jerusalem and renamed St John's Wood.
The School and Eyre Estates
During the reformation, St John's Wood was divided. Part was given to Lord Wooton and later sold to the Eyre family and the rest was given to John Lyon’s Harrow School foundation. The Harrow School and Eyre Estates remain intact to the present day.
Types of property for sale
St John's Wood offers a mix of stylish, low-built villas and mansions with large gardens. It also has apartment complexes with communal leisure facilities and un-modernised properties with huge development potential.
