Henley area and property guide
Why live here in Henley
Henley sits at the foot of the Chiltern hills with pretty countryside, much of which is designated AONB. This has resulted in demand from those who see Henley and its surrounding villages as the first proper rural area to the west of London.
The area is well served by motorways (M4 and M40) and good commuter rail links to Paddington or Marylebone.
History
Royal Regatta
Held here since 1839. The Henley Royal Regatta takes place in the first week in July and is a high point of the social calendar. The Knight Frank Henley office faces onto the Thames and is opposite the world famous Leander Club, a centre of excellence for world rowing that has produced Olympic gold medallists Sir Steve Redgrave and Matthew Pinsent CBE.
Fame
Henley is home to many high profile people, such as the late George Harrison, celebrity chef Anthony Worrall Thompson, broadcaster and journalist Jeremy Paxman, Jimmy Page lead guitarist with Led Zeppelin and Oasis front man Liam Gallagher to name but a few.
Town hall
The original Henley town hall, built in 1795, is an elegant Georgian building that was sold to a private buyer in 1897 and moved brick by brick to its current location in Crazies Hill, to the east of the town. The replacement town hall was constructed on the same site as the original in 1901.
