History
Guildford began as a Saxon village by a ford, called guilden (golden) ford and turned into a town in the early 10th century. During the 17th century, Guildford remained a small and relatively unimportant market town, growing rapidly in the 19th century. The biggest change was the arrival of the railway in 1845. The industries included brewing, engineering and printing.
