Limehouse, E14 area and property guide

Limehouse is a quiet village compared to the hustle and bustle of Canary Wharf. The area is mainly made up of Narrow Street and the Limehouse Basin. Being situated between Canary Wharf and the City, it provides easy access to both for professional individuals via the Docklands Light Railway (DLR).

History
The name
The Limehouse name relates to lime-kilns located by the river and operated by the large potteries that served shipping in the docks.

The marsh
Limehouse became a significant port in the late medieval age and had better links with the river than with the land, as the land route was across a marsh. This led the industries such as shipbuilding, chandelling, and rope making to become established.

The canal
The basin opened in 1820 as the Regents Canal Dock, providing an important connection between the Thames and the canal system. An industry relying on casual employment, new and replacement ships’ crews would be found wherever they were available: local sailors being particularly prized for their knowledge of currents and hazards in foreign ports.

Chinatown in Limehouse
As crews were laid off at the end of their voyage, permanent communities became established, including a large Chinatown. Like much of the East End, Limehouse remained a focus for immigration, but after the devastation of the Second World War many of the Chinese community relocated to Soho.

Types of property for sale
Limehouse has a mixture of warehouse conversions and modern purpose-built developments overlooking both the river and basin.
