Isle of Dogs, E14 area and property guide
Lying just to the south of the Canary Wharf estate, the Isle of Dogs attracts professional individuals who love the views of the river and the easy commute to work.
History
The peninsula called the Isle of Dogs was originally known as Stepney Marsh. The urbanisation of the Isle of Dogs took place in the 19th century following the construction of several successful docks, bringing many associated industries, such as flour and sugar processing, and shipbuilding.
In 1858, the largest ship of that time, Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s SS Great Eastern was launched here. Dock workers settled on the "island" as the docks grew in importance, and by 1901, 21,000 people lived here, largely dependent on the river trade.
During World War II, the docks were targeted by the Luftwaffe. Many warehouses were destroyed and much of the dock system was put out of action. After the war, the docks underwent a brief resurgence and were even upgraded in 1967. However, with the advent of containerisation, they became obsolete soon afterwards and the last docks closed in 1980.
