Overview

Living in The Three Counties

The Three Counties of Worcestershire, Herefordshire and Gloucestershire are some of the country’s most beautiful counties, perhaps best known for their idyllic black & white villages situated amidst stunning scenic landscape and noted Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The region also offers a wealth of opportunities and lifestyle choices; its central location provides excellent accessibility and communication links throughout the rest of the country, it has a number of top achieving Independent schools, acclaimed professional county sports, an array of leisure, recreational and country pursuits, a keen arts & cultural scene including numerous celebrated festivals, and a fantastic supply of local food producers.

The region is traditionally noted for its abundant farming. The Vale of Evesham to the east has its reputed Plum and Asparagus Festivals, and across towards the west through Herefordshire where there are abundant hop fields and vines, there are business leading fermenters of wines, ciders, perries and beers. It is of course also famed for the local Morgan Sports car factory, and eminently for holding the Royal Warrants for its natural Malvern Spring Waters, Lea & Perrins Worcestershire Sauce, and Royal Worcester Porcelain; to name drop a few. Agriculture remains a significant industry with Herefordshire cattle and Ryeland sheep being notable exports.

Well known food fairs are held annually in Ludlow and nearby Abergavenny, and most towns in the area have excellent regular farmers markets.

Property available in Worcester and Hereford

The most sought after properties in Worcester are Victorian, Regency or Georgian, with well-proportioned rooms and generous gardens. There are an array of different styles of property in Hereford. Styles range from red sandstone and white stucco to red brick and black and white timber framed houses. Whether you are looking for a small cottage, striking manor house, large farmhouse or magnificent country estate, Knight Frank can find the property that's right for you in Worcester or Hereford.

When comparing property in the Three Counties to elsewhere in the country, it's worth considering:

  • You will pay more than double the money for a comparable farmhouse in Oxfordshire
  • A character cottage in Worcestershire or Herefordshire is about two thirds of the price of one in Oxfordshire
  • A Cotswold manor house is now around three times the price of a Worcestershire or Herefordshire based manor house.

History

The cities of Worcester and Hereford boast great historical significance. Worcester is where the English Civil War ended, with the Battle of Worcester in 1651.There is a wealth of historical architecture throughout the county; perhaps most notably recorded by the magnificent Norman/Gothic Cathedral which is the striking backdrop of the legendary County Cricket Ground. It was here in the Cathedral that Sir Edward Elgar’s (born just outside of Worcester) revised version of the Enigma Variations was first performed during the 1899 Three Choirs Festival. This world renowned festival is still enjoyed each August between the “Three Counties” cathedrals of Hereford, Gloucester and Worcester.
