Living in Highbury
Properties in Highbury come in many guises, from elegant Georgian terraces overlooking the wide open spaces of Highbury Fields to red brick late-Victorian houses that are common in the area. Properties with views over the Fields command a premium and whole houses on roads such as Highbury Place and Highbury Terrace are some of the largest in the area. There is also strong demand for flats in the Edwardian mansion blocks on the west side of Highbury Fields which offer more lateral space and are popular with pied-a-terre buyers and downsizers alike.
There are also a number of new developments in the area, most notably Highbury Stadium Square, the re-development of Arsenal’s former football ground which was converted in to stunning one, two and three bedroom apartments together with a number of penthouses. The landscaped communal gardens have been created from the original two acre pitch and the concierge can be found in the original “marble hall”.
Highbury has long been associated with football and is the home to Arsenal Football Club, with the new Emirates stadium dominating the north London skyline.
Highbury Fields lie at the heart of Highbury. Surrounded by Italianate villas and Georgian terraces and at 29 acres, it is the largest green space in the borough. Highbury Fields also boasts a public swimming pool at its southern end and tennis courts to the north for the use of local residents. The shops, delis and cafés of Highbury Barn bring the community together and give the area a wonderful village-like atmosphere.
Transport in Highbury is excellent; Highbury & Islington Underground station at the southern end of Highbury Fields connects to the West End in less than 15 minutes and also provides a useful link to Stansted airport. First Capital Connect services from Drayton Park, close to the Emirates, links Highbury to the City via Moorgate.
