Living in Canonbury

Canonbury or Barnsbury? There has always been some debate about which area of Islington is the most sought after. Some would say Barnsbury but to many, Canonbury reigns supreme. The roads which make up “The Alwynes”, saved from demolition in the 1970’s, are highly prized and favoured for their wide, semi-detached villas dating from the 1840’s. Properties on Alwyne Road, backing on to the historic New River are some of the most valuable in Islington.

Lateral space is hard to come by in Islington; however Canonbury is one of the few places in which it can be found. One and two bedroom lateral flats can be found hidden behind the stucco fronted facades of Compton Road whilst some of the largest houses in Islington are to be found on Compton Terrace home to the Union Chapel, a working church and award winning music venue.

New developments are fewer in number in Canonbury, however, blocks such as John Spencer Square, arranged around attractive communal gardens and dating from the 1950’s are always in high demand and popular due to their close proximity to excellent public transport.

Canonbury is the most historic part of Islington. Its roots can be traced back to the 1200’s when the land was given to the Canons of St Bartholomew’s in Smithfield and became known as Canonbury. One of the oldest surviving buildings in Canonbury is Canonbury Tower, built between 1509 and 1532 and was home to Thomas Cromwell from 1533 until his execution in 1540.

Today, Canonbury is an attractive leafy residential area. For shoppers, the focus is Cross Street which is home to an eclectic mix of shops and is just off Upper Street whilst more local amenities including wonderful coffee shops such as Maison d’etre on Canonbury Road and restaurants such as Smokehouse and Trullo can be found tucked away amongst the tree lined streets of central Canonbury.

Art lovers can spend hours poring over the modern Italian art collection at the Estorick Collection known internationally for its core of futurist works as well as figurative art and sculpture dating from the 1890’s to the 1950’s.

Canonbury’s residents also enjoy easy access to the Victoria line at Highbury & Islington station which whisks you to the West End in under fifteen minutes, whilst Canonbury Overground station provides a useful east/west connection across the capital.
