Living in Hereford

Fortified in the early part of the 7th century by Saxon settlers as a defence against the marauding Welsh, Hereford is an ancient city that is dominated by Hereford Cathedral. The cathedral houses some of the finest examples of architecture from Norman times to the present day, including the renowned Chained Library and the famous Mappa Mundi, a unique map of the world drawn around AD 1300. The magnificent cathedral also hosts Europe’s oldest music festival, the Three Choirs Festival, every three years.

An important market centre, Hereford is located in the middle of the county and has excellent road and rail connections.

The central open space hosts a range of events including the popular farmers’ markets and general market, and is bordered by a comprehensive range of shopping opportunities including the covered ‘Butter Market’.

Famous for cattle, sheep, cider and hops, the locally produced food and drink are of high quality and an increasingly important element in the lifestyle of Herefordshire, so it is hardly surprising there are many sophisticated restaurants in the region.

Hereford is complimented by the thriving and historic market towns of Monmouth, Ross on Wye, Ledbury, Leominster, Ludlow and Hay on Wye, all of them offering excellent shopping, recreational amenities and schooling. With the River Wye meandering through stunning unspoilt countryside, awash with artisan makers and producers, beguiling black and white villages, and a whole host of year round events, festivals and activities, there is certainly something for everyone to enjoy.

History

Hereford owes its origins to its strategic military position on the north bank of the River Wye. Taking advantage of a large gravel mound overlooking a reliable fording place across the river, Saxon settlers fortified the site as a defence against the marauding Welsh during the early part of the 7th century.

Its military role was expanded following the Norman conquest in 1066 and in the 13th century the castle was extended and a twelve foot high, sandstone perimeter wall with six gatehouses replaced the existing earth and timber palisade. The city's military importance eventually declined only to be replaced by a growing emphasis on the wool trade.

Following the Civil War the city retained its influence as the regional centre of a thriving agricultural community which produced the famous Hereford breed of cattle, the Ryelands sheep and many improved varieties of apple and pear.
